Rockstar Games is currently facing a serious data breach threat after being targeted by the hacker group ShinyHunters for the second time in three years. The group has threatened to release stolen data unless their ransom demands are met, setting a deadline of April 14, 2026, for negotiations.
According to Rockstar, a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed during this breach, which involved unauthorized access to their Snowflake environment through a third-party platform, Anodot. ShinyHunters claimed to have obtained authentication tokens that allowed them access to a connected Snowflake account.
This incident follows a previous breach in 2022, where 90 minutes of in-development footage from the highly anticipated game Grand Theft Auto VI was leaked. The Grand Theft Auto series is one of the best-selling video game franchises globally, with Grand Theft Auto V and its multiplayer mode generating around $8 billion since its release in 2013.
The development costs for Grand Theft Auto VI are estimated to be close to $2 billion, and the game was originally slated for release in Autumn 2025 but has since been delayed to November 19, 2026. Rockstar Games has stated that this latest incident has no impact on their organization or players, emphasizing that they are working to address the situation.
ShinyHunters has a history of targeting major companies, including Microsoft, Cisco, and Ticketmaster, and has also been responsible for hacks of Salesforce and Bumble in recent years. Their threats to Rockstar Games include warnings that failure to comply will lead to data leaks and other unspecified digital problems.
As the situation develops, Rockstar Games continues to assess the impact of the breach and the potential ramifications for their operations and upcoming releases. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the extent of the data compromised and the company’s response strategy.
