This phrase refers to the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory that Argentina invaded in 1982 before Britain regained control during a brief conflict initiated by then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher.
Fernandez later took to Instagram to defend the team’s overall effort, though he did not specifically mention his red card in the final. He was part of the Argentina team that secured the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by defeating France, and had been aiming for a second consecutive world title before the recent defeat. In his message, Fernandez reflected on the experience, stating, “As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result.”
He further elaborated on the team’s dedication, saying, “For years, this group has represented the team in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn’t just about winning; it’s about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up.” Fernandez also expressed gratitude to the supporters, acknowledging their consistent presence and unconditional support. Goalkeeper’s Future and Match Details
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez also posted on Instagram following the defeat, indicating that he would take time to consider his international future. The Aston Villa player was a member of Argentina’s World Cup-winning side four years prior. Martinez shared his disappointment, stating, “I dreamed of winning it again; I dreamed of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more.”
He added, “Honestly, the pain is hard to put into words. Now I have to reflect on many things, see how to move forward, and decide if it’s time to step aside. I am truly sorry. I gave it my all to help my country and my team-mates.” The final match itself was characterized as dour, notably due to Argentina’s defensive approach throughout the game. Ferran Torres’s strike in the 106th minute ultimately decided the outcome of the match.
