FIFA has initiated an investigation into an on-pitch altercation involving players from Argentina and Spain following the conclusion of their World Cup final match in New Jersey, United States. Spain secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time, claiming their second world title.
The global governing body of football confirmed on Monday that its disciplinary committee is reviewing match reports concerning the multi-player brawl. This incident marred Spain’s celebrations and concluded a highly charged match. A statement from FIFA indicated that a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor has been appointed to investigate potential breaches of the FDC related to the post-match events. The findings and results of this probe will be released upon its completion.
Post-Match Confrontations
Following the final whistle, several players from both teams became involved in a physical confrontation. A widely circulated video shows Spain’s Lamine Yamal on his knees in prayer while multiple altercations occurred in the background, with Argentinian players reportedly engaging physically with their Spanish counterparts.
During the incident, Argentina defender Leandro Paredes reportedly shoved Spain’s Eric Garcia. When Spanish substitute Gavi attempted to intervene, Paredes pushed him to the ground. Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, intervened to separate Paredes from the two players, but Paredes continued to push other Spanish players before being pulled back by a teammate. Despite the general tension, some players, including Yamal and Argentina captain Lionel Messi, were seen embracing after the match.
As the post-match ceremony was being prepared, Spain’s players formed a guard of honour for the runners-up, applauding the Argentinian players as they approached to receive their silver medals. However, the Argentinian team did not reciprocate this gesture, reportedly turning their backs on the newly crowned champions as Spain received their gold medals and the winners’ trophy.
Player Reactions and Prior Incidents
The defeat was not well-received by some Argentinian players. Nicolás Otamendi, an Argentinian center-back, confronted Spain’s Rodri after the match. Otamendi reportedly told Rodri to “Start talking less, idiot. You guys spent the whole week crying.” He further added, “You and Laporte, both of you. That’s not how it’s done. You were crying to the referees all week, my friend.” Rodri, reportedly surprised, inquired about Otamendi’s reference to Laporte, to which Otamendi responded by asking if Rodri had not seen what Laporte had said earlier in the week.
Prior to the final, Spanish defender Aymeric Laporte had commented on Argentina’s aggressive playing style. He stated that he was not concerned about physical play if it remained within the bounds of football and if the referee performed their duties effectively. Laporte expressed surprise at certain situations in recent matches that had gone unpunished, particularly involving Argentina, noting that they tend to “leave little messages with its challenges.” He emphasized that such actions should not be permitted in significant tournaments as they can disrupt a player’s composure. Laporte also highlighted the referee’s role in maintaining control, suggesting that if players are allowed to act freely, the game could become chaotic. He noted Spain’s approach throughout the tournament had been fair, avoiding reckless fouls, and stressed the importance of maintaining this approach, while acknowledging the officiating would be a significant factor.
The timeline for the conclusion of FIFA’s probe into the on-pitch incident and whether any disciplinary actions will be taken against the players remains uncertain.
Ongoing Investigations
This investigation follows another probe initiated by FIFA last week concerning Argentinian players. This earlier investigation pertains to the display of a political banner after their World Cup semifinal victory against England. The banner, which read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (meaning “The Falklands are Argentinian”), was held up by defender Lisandro Martinez and unused substitute Giovani Lo Celso during their post-match celebrations. This action violated FIFA’s stadium code of conduct and generated controversy in the United Kingdom regarding the political sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, a self-governing British overseas territory located off the coast of Argentina.
FIFA confirmed the launch of this probe as a “standard procedure” after top government officials in the UK urged an investigation. A FIFA spokesperson stated on Thursday that FIFA’s independent disciplinary committee is currently assessing match reports and considering relevant circumstances before deciding on potential further steps based on the FIFA disciplinary code. FIFA has not yet provided an update on this particular probe.
