A 39-year-old man was arrested in Austria for lacing baby food jars with rat poison. This act was part of an alleged extortion attempt against the major organic baby food brand HiPP.

The arrest followed a product recall by HiPP after authorities discovered rat poison in baby food jars. Five tampered jars were recovered before consumption across Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

The investigation revealed that one jar contained 15 microgrammes of rat poison and was purchased at a Spar supermarket in Burgenland. Authorities believe the contamination was part of an extortion scheme targeting HiPP.

The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety has advised the public to avoid certain HiPP products. Symptoms of rat poison ingestion typically appear two to five days after consumption, creating a potential public health risk.

The suspect has been charged with deliberately causing a public danger and attempted grievous bodily harm. He remains under investigation in connection with the tampering of HiPP baby food products.

HiPP stated that its products were not tainted during production, asserting the recall was due to a criminal act. Helmut Marban from Austrian police mentioned, “However, for tactical investigative reasons, we cannot provide any information about the further steps of the investigation.”

This case involved law enforcement from multiple countries due to its cross-border nature. Police indicated they believed the crime was carried out to extort the company.

HiPP issued a product recall after authorities found rat poison in baby food jars sold in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The next steps in this ongoing investigation remain uncertain as officials continue to gather evidence.
