Narges Mohammadi’s health has critically deteriorated in prison, leading to her urgent hospitalization on May 1, 2026. She suffered two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis.

Mohammadi was arrested on December 12, 2025, in Mashhad. In February 2026, she received a sentence exceeding seven years for her activism. Six years of that sentence were for “gathering and collusion to commit crimes.” Her family alleged she faced physical abuse during her arrest.

The Nobel Committee condemned the “ongoing life-threatening mistreatment” of Mohammadi earlier this year. She had previously been serving a sentence of 13 years and nine months before her December arrest. In late 2024, she received temporary release due to medical concerns.

Doctors stated that her condition was critical and could not be managed in prison. Supporters had warned about her declining health for months prior to her hospitalization. The Narges Mohammadi Foundation described the transfer as an unavoidable necessity.

Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her rights campaigning. Her family characterized the move to hospital as a “last-minute action” that could prove too late. Mostafa Nili, a neurologist, noted that addressing her neurological state is currently the clinical priority despite serious cardiac issues.
