Reaction from the field

On March 20, 2026, the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) in Lahore, Pakistan, approved significant fee reductions aimed at enhancing educational accessibility for students. The Academic Council, during its 238th meeting chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shahid Munir, announced a 50% reduction in PhD admission fees and a 30% reduction in tuition fees. Additionally, a 50% fee reduction was granted specifically for non-Muslim students, who were also upgraded from Category A-2 to Category A-1, further emphasizing UET’s commitment to inclusivity.

This decision is part of UET’s broader transformation from a limited private higher education institution to a multifunctional university, a process that has been ongoing for the past 18 months. UET’s transformation was recognized in 2017 when it received accreditation from a British agency with maximum points, reflecting its commitment to quality education and institutional growth.

In conjunction with these fee reductions, UET has also made strides in providing job opportunities for its students. The UET Job Fair 2026 attracted approximately 7,000 student visits and featured 63 participating businesses. This event resulted in nearly 3,500 job and internship opportunities for technology students, showcasing the university’s strong connections with industry leaders.

According to Ms. Huong, a representative at the job fair, the event focused on various fields including IT, data, software, telecommunications, and engineering. She highlighted that the festival brings many internship and job opportunities for students across diverse sectors, emphasizing the university’s role in bridging the gap between education and employment.

Moreover, Dr. Bui Trung Ninh noted that the global trend of incorporating artificial intelligence in recruitment processes is on the rise, with about 87% of companies utilizing AI for hiring. This trend underscores the importance of equipping students with relevant skills that align with industry demands, a goal that UET is actively pursuing through its educational programs.

The fee reductions and job opportunities represent a significant shift in UET’s approach to education, aiming to alleviate financial burdens on students while enhancing their employability. This initiative is expected to attract a more diverse student body and foster a more inclusive academic environment.

While these developments are promising, details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term impact of these changes on student enrollment and job placement rates. As UET continues to evolve, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the outcomes of these initiatives and their implications for the future of higher education in Pakistan.
