Friday Holiday Notification in Sindh

The Sindh government has declared a public holiday on March 13, 2026 (Friday) across the province for all government offices and public sector institutions. This announcement aligns with the observance of Jumma-tul-Wida, the last Friday of Ramadan.

According to the notification, essential services will continue to operate as usual during this holiday. The holiday applies to all government offices, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous organisations, corporations, and local councils under the administrative control of the Sindh government.

Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah confirmed, “The public holiday would be observed on Friday for Jumma-tul-Wida.” Furthermore, the Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah stated, “The government of Sindh has been pleased to declare March 13, 2026, as a public holiday throughout the province of Sindh for all government offices, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils under the administrative control of the government of Sindh, except essential services.”

Prior to this holiday, a public holiday was observed on March 12, 2026, for Youm-e-Ali. Schools across the province will remain closed from March 16 to 31, 2026, while colleges and universities will conduct online classes during this period. Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon noted, “Schools will have spring holidays from March 16 to 31, while colleges and universities will conduct online classes. No exams will be postponed.”

This public holiday is part of a broader initiative by the Sindh government, which has implemented a work-from-home arrangement for government employees on Fridays as part of an austerity and fuel conservation plan. This decision follows a national austerity plan introduced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

It is important to note that if Ramadan completes 29 fasting days, March 13 will mark Jumma-tul-Wida; otherwise, it will fall on March 20. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact reason for the public holiday and the confirmation of the moon sighting affecting the date of Jumma-tul-Wida.

Preparations for Youm-e-Ali in Karachi

The 21st of Ramadan, observed annually to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali (RA), is approaching with significant preparations in Karachi. Traditionally, this day is marked by a large mourning procession that attracts thousands of participants, reflecting the deep reverence for Hazrat Ali among Muslims.

This year, the main mourning procession is scheduled to commence from Nishtar Park at 1 PM on March 11, 2026, and will conclude at Imambargah Hussainia Iranian in Kharadar. The route along MA Jinnah Road will be closed to general traffic from Guru Mandir to Tower, ensuring the safety and smooth flow of the procession.

Security Measures in Place

In light of the expected turnout and the importance of the event, Karachi Police have implemented extensive security measures. A total of 5,213 police officers and personnel will be deployed across the city to maintain order and ensure the safety of participants. This includes the assignment of 19 Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), 53 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), and 4,244 police personnel.

Additionally, 755 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) will assist in security efforts, while Quick Response Teams (QRTs) will remain on standby to address any emergencies that may arise during the procession.

Fasting Observances in Peshawar

On the same day, Muslims in Peshawar will observe the 21st fast of Ramadan. For those following the Hanafia school, Sehri will be at 5:20 AM, with Iftari at 6:15 PM, resulting in a fasting duration of 12 hours and 56 minutes. Meanwhile, the Jafria community will break their fast at 6:25 PM, having fasted for 13 hours and 6 minutes.

As the day approaches, the significance of Youm-e-Ali is underscored by both the mourning processions and the communal fasting, reflecting the unity and devotion of the Muslim community during Ramadan.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional measures that may be implemented as the date draws closer, but the current preparations indicate a strong commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful observance of this important day.

School Holiday Announced for Youm-e-Ali

The central question surrounding the recent announcement is: Why has the Sindh government declared a school holiday on March 11? The answer lies in the observance of Youm-e-Ali, a significant day commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali (RA), the fourth caliph of Islam.

The Sindh government confirmed that all schools and colleges, both public and private, will remain closed on this date. This decision aims to ensure uniformity across the province’s education sector, affecting thousands of students and staff members.

The holiday corresponds to the 21st of Ramazan, a period of deep religious significance for many in the region. The closure was officially approved during a steering committee meeting held on February 12, highlighting the government’s commitment to recognizing important cultural and religious observances.

Officials stated, “The holiday will be observed in all government and private schools across the province,” ensuring that educational institutions align with the observance of this important day. The closure applies to both schools and colleges, indicating a broad impact on the educational landscape in Sindh.

Regular classes are set to resume following the holiday, allowing students to return to their studies after this significant observance. The decision underscores the importance of Youm-e-Ali within the community and the government’s role in facilitating such observances.

As the date approaches, details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional events or activities planned in conjunction with the holiday. However, the focus remains on the observance of Youm-e-Ali and its significance to the people of Sindh.
