“Measures to curb corruption in shrine revenues have yielded results, with donation income at Data Darbar increasing by 30% to 150%,” stated Secretary Auqaf Dr Ehsan Bhutta.

The Auqaf and Religious Affairs Department is undertaking significant expansions of major shrines across Punjab, aiming to improve facilities for pilgrims and boost revenue. The expansion of the Data Darbar shrine is estimated to cost around Rs6.3 billion, with Rs1.7 billion and an additional Rs1 billion already transferred to the Communications and Works Department for this purpose.

Work has also commenced at the shrine of Bibi Pak Daman, with Rs40 million released from an allocated Rs100 million for the expansion project. These developments come as the Auqaf department oversees a total of 1,403 waqf properties, including 548 shrines and 437 mosques.

In addition to shrine expansions, the Chief Minister of Punjab has announced a relief package in response to recent challenges faced by residents. This package includes free public transport for one month, aimed at alleviating the burden on citizens.

Farmers in Punjab will benefit from a subsidy of Rs100 per litre of diesel per acre, while motorcycle owners will receive a similar subsidy of Rs100 per litre on up to 20 litres of fuel. This initiative is part of broader efforts to support the local economy.

Recent reports indicate that an earthquake affected multiple districts in Punjab, including Lahore, Sialkot, and Faisalabad. However, details remain unconfirmed regarding casualties or damage caused by the earthquake.

As the Auqaf department continues its expansion projects, uncertainties linger regarding the comprehensive strategy for land recovery and small shrine work in the aftermath of the earthquake.

With these initiatives, the Punjab government aims to enhance the pilgrimage experience while providing necessary support to its citizens during challenging times.
