Vietnam is launching a crackdown on online piracy and counterfeit goods. This action is a direct response to U.S. tariff threats due to Vietnam’s failure to tackle intellectual property violations.

On May 6, 2026, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung ordered a 20% increase in the detection of copyright infringement. This increase aims to address the concerns raised by the U.S., which has threatened tariffs if Vietnam does not improve its enforcement of intellectual property rights.

In a related context, the Global Sumud Flotilla attempted to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The flotilla was intercepted by Israeli forces on April 30, capturing 175 activists. Erika Guevara Rosas from Amnesty International criticized Israel’s actions, stating, “The Israeli navy crossing hundreds of miles just to ensure civilian boats carrying food, baby formula, and medical supplies don’t make it to Palestinians reveals the lengths Israel is prepared to go in order to maintain its cruel and unlawful blockade.”

Meanwhile, in Germany, the DFL and DAZN obtained a court injunction against the illegal streaming site livetv.sx. This platform had been described as the largest illegal sports streaming service in the German market. The court ruling is seen as a breakthrough in efforts to curb organized piracy networks.

Key facts:

The U.S. has threatened tariffs due to Vietnam’s failure to tackle intellectual property violations.

The Vietnamese government has mandated a 20% increase in copyright infringement detection.

A total of 175 activists were captured during the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla.

Livetv.sx had been active for 13 years before being targeted by legal action.

Ed McCarthy, COO of DAZN, remarked, “This court decision is a turning point in the fight against content theft in Germany.” Steffen Merkel, CEO of DFL, added that this decision is significant for protecting rights in which Bundesliga has invested heavily over many years.

The international landscape surrounding piracy enforcement continues to evolve. Vietnam’s actions reflect growing pressure from global powers like the United States regarding intellectual property rights.
