“The disruption resulted in an approximately 21-hour delay and caused considerable inconvenience for those on board,” said a spokesperson for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) regarding flight PK-242.

The flight, which was scheduled to arrive in Karachi from Dammam at 11:40 PM on Saturday night, landed nearly a full day late due to a combination of bad weather and crew duty time limitations. The situation escalated when the flight was diverted to Al Qassim Airport for about four hours before ultimately returning to Karachi.

Around 170 passengers were affected by the delay, many of whom were stranded at Dammam Airport for hours without adequate information. “Passengers who had already cleared immigration remained stuck in airport lounges,” one affected traveler noted.

As the hours passed, many passengers spent the night in uncomfortable conditions, sitting on chairs or lying on the floor. Families struggled to care for young children and elderly relatives amidst the chaos.

After the diversion, the flight eventually departed Dammam around 7 PM and reached Karachi at 8:45 PM. However, the crew could not depart immediately after that because duty time limitations required mandatory rest following extended working hours.

Airline staff were reportedly unable to provide adequate facilities in accordance with aviation regulations, further compounding the frustration of those affected. Passengers cleared immigration but were left confined to airport lounges, with limited communication from the airline about the situation.

The delay has drawn attention to the operational challenges faced by airlines, particularly during adverse weather conditions. The incident highlights the need for better contingency planning to minimize passenger inconvenience during such disruptions.

As of now, PIA has not released a formal statement regarding compensation or follow-up measures for the affected passengers. Details remain unconfirmed.

Pakistan International Airlines has made significant changes to its flight operations due to rising jet fuel prices, impacting routes and services.

On April 6, 2026, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) announced major changes to its flight operations in response to soaring jet fuel prices, which have increased by 150%. This decision comes as the airline prepares for the upcoming Hajj 2026 season.

Just before this announcement, PIA had been facing challenges due to the unavailability of spare parts, which had grounded its Boeing 777 aircraft since May 2025. However, the airline successfully conducted a test flight of the Boeing 777, marking its return to service. This aircraft is expected to enhance PIA’s long-haul capacity.

As of now, PIA has ended all passenger discounts except for children and infants, according to a spokesperson. The airline will limit its operations to the UAE to 16 flights a week and has decided to suspend flights to Gulf countries, except for the UAE and Saudi Arabia, until the end of April.

Additionally, PIA will halt flights to Beijing starting April 11 and to Kuala Lumpur from April 14. These changes reflect the airline’s strategy to manage its resources amid rising operational costs.

Looking ahead, PIA is set to launch its Hajj 2026 flight operations on April 18, which will accommodate a total of 180,000 pilgrims. This includes 120,000 pilgrims under the government scheme and 60,000 through private operators. A new route from Lahore to Saudi Arabia will also be introduced specifically for this purpose.

Sardar Muhammad Yousuf, a spokesperson for PIA, emphasized the airline’s commitment to providing high-quality arrangements for Hajj 2026, aiming to make it exemplary in terms of management and facilities.

Moreover, PIA resumed its London operations on March 29, 2026, after a six-year hiatus, with the first flight carrying 325 passengers. This resumption is part of the airline’s efforts to improve its international service offerings.

In summary, PIA’s recent operational changes are crucial for managing its flight services amid fluctuating fuel prices and preparing for significant events like Hajj 2026. The adjustments are expected to impact many travelers and the overall aviation landscape in the region.
