Moeen Ali, aged 38, has expressed a strong desire to coach the England men’s cricket team in the future. Following his retirement from international cricket in 2024, Ali is currently in Dubai preparing to join the England Lions’ white-ball camp while also undertaking preparations to obtain the England and Wales Cricket Board Level Three Coaching Qualification.
Ali, who has had a notable career, including his final Test series during the 2023 Ashes, has stated, “That is the dream. One hundred per cent, that would be the dream (to be an England coach)… I think one day, I would want to be a top international coach. Definitely.” His father, Munir, who was his first coach, operates the Moeen Ali Cricket Academy, highlighting the importance of coaching in his life.
In addition to his coaching aspirations, Ali has reversed his retirement from English domestic cricket and is set to represent Yorkshire in the Vitality Blast. He also plans to play for the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, continuing his active involvement in franchise cricket across various countries.
Reflecting on England’s recent performance, Ali noted, “We [England] got exposed a little bit in Australia, in my opinion, because of probably a bit of a lack of technique at times.” His belief in the importance of technique is evident, as he stated, “I am a massive believer in technique. I always have been.”
As he navigates this transitional phase in his career, Ali remains focused on his goal of becoming a coach while also engaging in playing opportunities. He mentioned, “It feels miles away. But when you are playing club cricket or domestic cricket, you feel like England’s miles away… Things can change. Things can happen quickly.”
Observers expect Ali to explore various coaching and punditry opportunities as he prepares for his future in cricket. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific timeline for his coaching ambitions, but his commitment to the sport remains clear.
