On April 3, 2026, a statue of Magawa, the renowned demining rat, was unveiled in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This event commemorates the remarkable contributions of Magawa, who played a crucial role in detecting landmines in the region.
Magawa, trained by the Belgian charity APOPO, was active in landmine detection from 2016 to 2021. During his career, he successfully detected over 100 landmines and cleared more than 141,000 square meters of land, an area equivalent to 20 football pitches.
His ability to search an area the size of a tennis court in just 20 minutes showcased his efficiency and skill. Magawa’s efforts significantly contributed to making the land safer for local communities.
In recognition of his service, Magawa was awarded the PDSA Gold Medal in 2020, marking him as the first rat to receive this honor in the charity’s 77-year history. This accolade highlighted the impact that even the smallest creatures can have on human safety and well-being.
Magawa passed away in 2022 at the age of eight, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and dedication. His work not only saved lives but also inspired many to recognize the potential of animals in humanitarian efforts.
During the unveiling ceremony, Ly Thuch, a prominent figure in the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), remarked, “Before us stands Magawa – a small creature, yet one who changed the ground beneath our feet.”
Thuch further emphasized the significance of the statue, stating, “The statue we unveil today carries more than form. It carries a message — that even the smallest actor can leave a lasting impact.” This sentiment resonates deeply with those who have witnessed the devastation caused by landmines.
The statue serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by landmines in Cambodia and the importance of continued efforts in demining. While Magawa’s life has ended, his contributions will be remembered and celebrated.
As Cambodia continues to address the legacy of landmines, the story of Magawa stands as a testament to the innovative approaches being employed in humanitarian work. His legacy will inspire future generations to engage in similar efforts.
With the unveiling of this statue, Magawa’s spirit lives on, encouraging both local and international communities to support demining initiatives and to recognize the vital role that animals can play in these efforts.
