On April 7, 2026, in Peshawar, the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Faisal Karim Kundi, emphasized the critical role of youth in decision-making processes to combat extremism. This statement comes as the region continues to recover from a history marked by militancy and unrest, where the sacrifices of its people have been significant in restoring peace.
In a bid to support the local population, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government announced a temporary waiver of fees related to motorcycle and rickshaw registration, transfer, number plates, and smart cards for one month. This decision was formalized through the unanimous passage of the Provincial Motor Vehicle Ordinance (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) Amendment Bill, 2026, by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
The amendment specifically waives the transfer fees of Rs. 500 for motorcycles and Rs. 800 for rickshaws. Additionally, the relief package includes waiving Rs. 2,300 for private registration marks on motorbikes and Rs. 2,600 for rickshaws during this one-month period.
Furthermore, the government launched the Ehsaas Fuel Support Program aimed at low-income motorcycle and scooter owners. Under this initiative, registered owners will receive a monthly fuel subsidy of PKR 2,000, which is intended to alleviate the financial burden caused by inflation on daily commuting.
Applicants for the fuel support scheme are required to upload their CNIC, vehicle registration book, and a picture of their vehicle. Governor Kundi stated that sustainable peace necessitates strong ties between the state and society, highlighting the importance of continuous dialogue for achieving sustainable development.
Syed Fakhar Jahan, a key figure in the initiative, remarked, “Our vision is to deliver relief directly to deserving citizens and ease the pressures of inflation to make everyday life more manageable.” This sentiment reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the economic challenges faced by its citizens.
It is important to note that the waiver of fees is a temporary measure and will not be extended if the economic situation improves. Governor Kundi also pointed out that, “We cannot progress unless we face the truth and acknowledge our mistakes,” underscoring the need for transparency and public trust in governance.
The current initiatives by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government are significant as they aim to engage youth in meaningful ways while also providing immediate financial relief to the community. The success of these measures could play a crucial role in fostering a more stable and prosperous environment in the region.
