Spain’s Diplomatic Withdrawal

Spain’s Foreign Ministry confirms the withdrawal of the ambassador to Tel Aviv, who was called back for consultations ‘indefinitely.’ This decision comes amid a diplomatic standoff over Israeli policies and the ongoing Gaza war, which was triggered by the Hamas-led invasion of southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

Gideon Sa’ar, an Israeli politician, criticized Spain’s actions, stating that the country is leading ‘a hostile, anti-Israel line.’ The tensions between Israel and Spain have notably escalated since the onset of the Gaza conflict, with Spain implementing a prohibition on sales and purchases of military equipment with Israel from the start of the war.

As part of the diplomatic fallout, Spain’s embassy in Tel Aviv will now be led by a charge d’affaires for the foreseeable future. Similarly, Israel’s embassy in Spain is also managed by a charge d’affaires after Israel recalled its ambassador in May 2024.

Ambassador Ana Maria Salomon Perez was recalled to Spain last September amid a diplomatic row over Spanish measures banning aircraft and ships carrying weapons to Israel. This series of events underscores the growing rift between the two nations.

As of March, Israel holds approximately 9,500 Palestinian prisoners, a situation that continues to fuel tensions in the region. The conflict in the Middle East is rapidly evolving, with economic ramifications of the US-Israel conflict with Iran being a key issue.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the future diplomatic relations between Israel and Spain, as both countries navigate the complexities of the ongoing conflict and its broader implications.
