Doha is experiencing significant air travel disruptions as Qatar Airways has announced a limited flight schedule to and from the city, effective from March 18 until March 28. This decision comes in response to the escalating tensions in the region, particularly due to the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, which has severely impacted air travel across the Middle East.
Since February 28, Iran has been targeting US assets and civilian sites in Gulf countries, resulting in over 1,400 fatalities and extensive damage to infrastructure within Iran. In light of these developments, Qatar has rejected Iranian claims that its strikes do not target civilian locations. Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman, Majed al-Ansari, stated that Iranian attacks have hit LNG facilities, an industrial complex, the airport, and residential areas.
Qatar has called on Iran to cease its attacks on Gulf countries to facilitate a diplomatic resolution to the crisis. Al-Ansari emphasized, “Iran must stop the attacks immediately so that a diplomatic solution to the crisis can be found.” The ongoing threat to civilians has led to significant evacuations, with alerts issued in Doha during missile threats from Iran.
Qatar’s air defenses have reportedly intercepted over 90% of incoming attacks, showcasing the effectiveness of its military response during this turbulent period. However, the situation remains precarious, with two air-raid alerts issued in Doha amid the Iranian missile threats.
Despite the escalating conflict, there are currently no mediation efforts between the US and Iran, as confirmed by Qatar’s foreign ministry. Al-Ansari expressed appreciation for the defense support from European allies during this crisis, stating, “These are the times when you know your partners and your friends as assets, and this is what we have seen when it comes to Europe.”
The limited flight operations by Qatar Airways reflect the broader impact of the conflict on regional air travel, with many travelers facing uncertainty as the situation evolves. The air travel disruptions highlight the ongoing challenges faced by civilians in the region, as safety concerns continue to mount.
As the conflict progresses, further developments are anticipated, and the potential for escalation remains a concern for both regional and international stakeholders. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the future of air travel in Doha and the broader implications of the ongoing conflict.
