Autism Awareness and Progress in Punjab

autism — PK news

Before recent developments, the landscape for autism support was marked by significant challenges. With 1 in 127 people diagnosed with autism, many faced stigma, discrimination, and barriers to participation in society. Access to timely and quality healthcare and support services remained limited, contributing to long-standing inequalities for the neurodivergent community.

However, a decisive moment occurred with the establishment of new autism centers and the upgrading of schools in Punjab. Currently, 27 divisional schools now host autism centers, and 28 schools have been upgraded to Centers of Excellence for autism. Additionally, 313 institutions for special persons in Punjab are set to be improved, marking a significant shift in the region’s approach to autism.

The direct effects of these changes are profound. As Maryam Nawaz stated, “Special children are not a burden but a blessing,” emphasizing the value of autistic individuals in society. Sania Ashiq added, “Children with autism are not different but perceive the world uniquely,” highlighting the need for understanding and inclusion.

World Autism Awareness Day, established by the UN General Assembly in 2007, aims to combat social stigma and promote the full integration of autistic individuals into society. This day advocates for policies that foster neuro-inclusive environments in health, education, workplaces, and sports, further supporting the recent initiatives in Punjab.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain. Limited access to high-quality healthcare and support services continues to create inequalities for the neurodivergent community. Furthermore, scientific evidence disproves harmful stereotypes, such as the misconception that autism is caused by bad parenting or vaccinations.

As Punjab moves forward, the focus on early identification, inclusive education, and nurturing care can significantly improve health, well-being, and participation for autistic individuals. The ongoing commitment to enhancing resources and support systems is essential for fostering an inclusive society.
