Karachi Storm Claims 19 Lives Amid Gale-Force Winds

A powerful storm accompanied by heavy rain and gale-force winds has killed at least 19 people in Karachi, Pakistan. Winds reached speeds of up to 90 kilometres per hour, with gusts recorded at 97 kph in Mauripur.

Initial reports indicate that at least 15 bodies were brought to Karachi’s main hospital following the storm. Additionally, more than two dozen individuals were treated for injuries sustained in various weather-related incidents.

Among the fatalities, a man was struck by lightning near Yaru Goth, while a woman lost her life when the roof of her house collapsed in Korangi’s Sector 3½. Another man died after a tree fell on him in Korangi No 5.

The storm brought significant rainfall, with Korangi recording the highest at 55.6 millimetres. Other areas experienced rainfall ranging between 15mm and 35mm.

This severe weather event follows a powerful thunderstorm system that hit Karachi just a day earlier, leading to widespread disruption and damage across the city.

Looking ahead, moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected to return to Karachi on Thursday. The city’s maximum temperature is projected to remain between 27°C and 29°C, while the minimum temperature recorded earlier in the day was 18.5°C.

Authorities are continuing to assess the damage and provide assistance to those affected. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the storm’s impact and any additional casualties that may arise as recovery efforts progress.
