The numbers

At least 75 people have been killed and 193 injured in Afghanistan due to ongoing cross-border fighting since February 26, according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The violence has escalated dramatically, particularly following a controversial air strike attributed to Pakistan.

On the night of the air strike, which occurred around 9 PM local time, Afghanistan accused Pakistan’s military of targeting the Omar Addiction Treatment Hospital in Kabul. This attack reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 400 individuals, with around 250 others reported injured. The hospital, a significant facility with 2,000 beds, suffered extensive damage, with large sections of the building destroyed.

In response to the air strike, Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesperson for the Taliban, condemned the action, stating, “Pakistan has once again violated Afghanistan’s airspace and targeted a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul.” The Pakistani government, however, claimed that the strikes were aimed at military installations and infrastructure supporting terrorism.

The ongoing conflict has deep historical roots, with tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan flaring up in recent months. Fighting erupted last month when Pakistan launched air strikes targeting armed groups within Afghanistan. In the latest developments, four individuals, including two children, were killed in an exchange of fire along the border. Mortar shells fired from Pakistan struck villages in Khost province, resulting in the destruction of several homes.

Pakistan’s military has claimed to have killed 684 Afghan Taliban forces in the conflict, a statement that has been rejected by the Taliban government. In contrast, Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry stated that more than 100 Pakistani soldiers were killed in the ongoing clashes. This cycle of violence has raised concerns among international observers.

The UN Security Council has called on Afghanistan’s Taliban government to take decisive action against terrorism, reflecting the international community’s growing concern over the deteriorating security situation. Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of harboring armed groups, particularly the Pakistani Taliban, further complicating the already tense relations between the two nations.

As the situation continues to evolve, observers remain watchful of the potential for further escalation. The humanitarian impact of the violence is profound, with many civilians caught in the crossfire. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of casualties and damage in the affected areas.
