New Qualification Launch
On March 11, 2026, the UK introduced the SFJ Level 3 Award in Counter Terrorism Protective Security and Preparedness. This initiative aims to bolster the country’s counter terrorism efforts by enhancing protective security and organizational preparedness.
The qualification was developed under the working title of ‘Competent Person in the Workplace’ and is regulated by Ofqual. It was funded by the Home Office in response to recommendations made by the Manchester Arena Inquiry, which highlighted the need for improved training in counter terrorism measures.
Training Providers and Implementation
Approved training providers will receive a comprehensive qualification delivery package to facilitate the rollout of this new training program. Courses are already underway, indicating a swift implementation of this important educational initiative.
Jon Savell, a representative from the Counter Terrorism Policing, emphasized the significance of this qualification, stating, “Our main goal is to keep the public safe from the threat of terrorism, and this is now a tangible piece of training that staff in security, health and safety, and operational professions can obtain.” This statement underscores the qualification’s role in enhancing public safety.
Endorsement and Importance
David Higham noted that this qualification is the only one endorsed by Counter Terrorism Policing, enabling learners and organizations to identify and address the risks posed by terrorism to their premises. This endorsement adds credibility to the training and highlights its relevance in today’s security landscape.
Additionally, the Counter Terrorism Security Specialists Register is set to open for inquiries on April 1, further supporting the initiative’s infrastructure. This move is expected to create a network of professionals dedicated to counter terrorism efforts across the UK.
Current State and Future Implications
As of now, the qualification is live, and training sessions are actively being conducted. This proactive approach to counter terrorism training is crucial for enhancing the UK’s preparedness against potential threats.
The introduction of this qualification is significant for those involved in security and operational roles, as it provides them with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively respond to terrorist threats. The emphasis on training and preparedness reflects a broader commitment to public safety and security in the UK.
