Proactive Measures to Prevent Flooding

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has initiated a series of proactive measures to mitigate the impacts of urban flooding in Islamabad as the weather changes with the approach of the monsoon season. This decision follows severe flooding incidents in 2023 that affected multiple areas, including Saidpur, the Sohan River, and Nullah Korang.

In an effort to ensure the smooth flow of water during heavy rainfall, the CDA has decided to remove encroachments along Islamabad’s storm drains. This action is aimed at preventing the recurrence of flooding that has previously caused significant disruption and damage.

CDA officials have emphasized the importance of these measures, stating, “Learning a lesson from last year, the CDA has formalised strategies to address the issue.” The authority plans to map areas that were previously affected by rainwater accumulation, which will guide their efforts in identifying critical points and removing obstructions that impede water flow.

To further enhance their response capabilities, the CDA is establishing a flood control room to improve coordination between various departments. Additionally, the Capital Emergency Service has formed specialized water rescue teams, each consisting of 12 members, to respond swiftly to potential flooding emergencies.

Officials believe that these initiatives will play a crucial role in safeguarding residents and infrastructure from the adverse effects of heavy rainfall. They noted, “The effectiveness of these measures will become clear as the rainy season progresses.”

Islamabad has been experiencing increasing impacts of climate change in recent years, making the need for such proactive measures even more critical. The CDA’s efforts reflect a growing recognition of the challenges posed by changing weather patterns.

As the monsoon season approaches, the CDA’s actions are expected to significantly influence the city’s preparedness for potential flooding. However, details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of these measures and their anticipated outcomes.
