2026 Winter Paralympics Overview
The 2026 Winter Paralympics will take place from March 6 to March 15, 2026, in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, featuring a record 56 nations and 616 athletes competing across 79 medal events in 6 sports.
This event marks a significant increase in participation compared to the previous record of 564 athletes from 49 nations at the Pyeongchang 2018 Games. Notably, there will be 160 female athletes competing, representing a historic milestone for the Games.
Five countries will make their debut at the Winter Paralympics: El Salvador, Haiti, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Portugal. China leads the delegation with 70 athletes, followed closely by the United States with 68 and Canada with 46.
The opening ceremony is set to take place at the historic Verona Arena, while the competition days will run from March 7 to March 14, 2026. The closing ceremony will conclude the Games on March 15, 2026.
The Games will showcase six sports: Alpine skiing, Cross-country skiing, Biathlon, Snowboarding, Curling, and Ice hockey. The International Paralympic Committee has stated, “The Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games is the biggest ever in history.”
However, the opening ceremony is grappling with boycott threats from several countries, including the British government, which has refused to attend due to objections over the participation of Russia.
As the event approaches, thousands of competitors from around the world are expected to take part, with millions of fans following the action globally. The Games will be broadcasted through various networks and streaming platforms, ensuring wide accessibility.
Visually impaired athletes will also compete with a guide in cross-country skiing and biathlon, highlighting the inclusive nature of the event.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the final arrangements and the impact of potential boycotts on the event’s atmosphere and participation.
